Will Cagle is FINALLY Added to ARRA Roster of Researched Drivers

Ringoes,NJ – Capping off a project that has been on the shelves in the ARRA office for literally years, the Auto Racing Research Associates group of auto racing historians are very proud to announce that the career research of famed driver Candler “Will” Cagle, “The Tampa Terror” has now been added to the Associations highly popular auto racing statistics website!

And it was on the shelves for so long for good reason! ARRA President Fred Voorhees explains. “A good many years ago, I was sitting down with Will in a casual conversation in the press building at the New York State Fairgrounds race track pits during Super DIRT Week and I mentioned that I had been working on his career stats.” Fred pointed out. “Will informed me that he and his wife and constant companion Barbara were working on a book on Will’s career and had kept meticulous records of Will’s many, many wins going all the way back to his early years of competing in his home state of Florida. Because of their records and notes, they planned on publishing them in the book and asked that I keep a lid on the stats until they had the book available to the public because it would help to sell the publication.”

Voorhees promised to honor the legendary drivers wishes and while the research on his career continued, it was kept within the files of ARRA alone and never saw the light of day. “Oh, around six or seven years ago....” Fred began to add, “..a group of our historians got together and divided up the tasks to nail down Will’s wins and they completed their work, at least to their capabilities and available sources and it landed on my desk here at ARRA headquarters and I went over it…threw it all into a spreadsheet and it languished there waiting for the Will Cagle book to come out.”

The book has never seen the light of day for various reasons and just over a year ago, Cagle suffered a fall at his home and complications from that resulted in his passing at the age of 86. ARRA is aware that the possibility of the book is still viable. “I have spoken with Barbara a few times and I have explained to her that we would be interested in sharing notes to gain as accurate a profile of Will’s career and she talked with me at length about many wins. I understand that Bruce Griffin, Son of another famed Floridian racer “PeeWee” Griffin, is aiding her in tracking down Will’s early career Florida wins. It is ARRA’s hopes that the publication eventually gets published so that the thousands of Will Cagle fans can appreciate the depth and breadth of Cagle’s career and talents behind the wheel.”

With Cagle’s passing, and the chances of the book ever getting published diminishing each year…the group decided that it was time to get Will Cagle’s career research out for the racing public to view and appreciate. The group currently has a total of 531 documented feature wins, obtained at 48 different racing facilities accredited to “Wily Will” and they are pretty sure that there remains “some” wins obtained in Florida early in Will’s career that they were unable to unearth.

“It wouldn’t amount to all that many, but that is not the point.”, claims Voorhees. “Our mission is to document careers and histories as completely as possible and we try to do that in all of our work.” With that, he also adds that the historians of ARRA are always open to hearing about anything that might need to be added to the files. They will take the information and attempt to document the stat and if they can, will add it to their files.

“ I am so pleased to FINALLY post the career statistics of Will Cagle.” Fred notes. “His career was so stellar and so highly successful and his name was AND IS so widely recognized due to his success behind the wheel, it killed me NOT to have his page on our site!”
