FAST EDDIE MCCARTHY WINS 66TH GARDEN STATE CLASSIC FOR NASCAR MODFIEDS AT WALL STADIUM
WALL, NJ ~ Eddie McCarthy of Brick scored the biggest victory of his career by winning the 66th running of the Garden State Classic in the NASCAR Local Racing Series presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts on Saturday night at Wall Stadium. McCarthy earned a first place prize of $5000 plus bonus awards by winning the prestigious event.
Wall's Tyler Ferris was first the initial laps of the contest as McCarthy wrestled Howell's Jimmy Blewett for second in the early going. After powering into second McCarthy went after the leader and took command with an inside lane pass on lap 17. Soon Blewett and Jackson's Kyle Scisco advanced to second and third.
With the event going caution free through the first 79 laps McCarthy flexed the muscle of his No. 20 often stretching an advantage. The closing laps saw four yellow flags for incidents that involved former GSC champs Steven Reed of Jackson, Derek Hopkinson of Milltown and others. The final portion of the event went off without trouble as McCarthy and Blewett were the top two followed by Carsten DiGiantomasso, Reed and Scisco.
“I'm happy for my father about this big win,” McCarthy said. “My dad lives for this car and spends all week trying to make it faster. Bill Cole and my father are always thinking of way to make it faster and it works!”
Former champion Mike Alcaro of West Milford won the companion 30 lapper for the Legend cars, the first of three events that make up the Triple Crown Summer Slam for the popular division. Alcaro powered from fourth to the lead on lap six and never looked back. Anthony Marsh, early leader Timmy Solomito, Chevy Rommeney and Jayden Glennerster completed the top five.
Howell's Johnny Carpenter won his second Factory Stock 25 lapper of the season late in the contest after starting seventh. Elliott Wohl, Rob Anderton, Jared Okerson and Brian Osborn were second through fifth.
Howell's Blake Barney was impressive in winning the 25 lap main event for the touring ATMRA TQ Midgets. Kyle Taraska, Joey Payne, Jeff Kot and Geoffrey Sutton completed the top five.
